The Resolution Game


I recently read a news post from a friend regarding New Year's resolutions that really struck me. While he wasn't opposed to people working to better themselves through positive life changes, he was adamantly against the idea of launching those changes on some arbitrary date like January 1.

As many of you know, I have had the privilege of coaching high school cross country for the past several years. It's been a remarkable journey that I never imagined I would undertake. But I will forever be grateful that I have been given this opportunity to learn and grow alongside these young athletes.

This past week, I went on a spontaneous road trip with my son. We didn't run - he's more of a swimmer than a runner - and the primary purpose of the trip was a business meeting I had in the southwestern corner of our state. But that's kind of the beauty of the whole experience.

I have been asked why I seek advice from with other runners in an effort to learn more about my sport. And I suppose that’s a valid question considering that I make at least a portion of my living by coaching runners from high school harriers to middle-aged folks wanting to attempt their first 5Ks to friends hoping to notch that marathon personal best time.
