West Side Best Side Cross Country Series

Remember how cool it was running cross country in high school? It still is. The West Side Best Side Cross-Country Series includes several 5K-ish old-school, card-scored races held on many of the same area courses used by today's high school harriers. The run five/score three format encourages runners of all ages and abilities to come out, participate and enjoy an uncommon team bonding experience not found in many modern races. For a low entry fee, team and individual participants receive a retro t-shirt, awesome snacks and a coupon for beer (21 and older only, of course). Come relive your high school glory days or experience the fun of cross country racing for the first time. You know you want to do it!

Awards

Top male and female overall finishers will receive a certificate for a pair of Mizuno shoes. Each member of the top 2 men's, women's and mixed teams will receive ribbons. And, of course, there will be ribbons for the top 5 male and female finishers.

Timing

You will receive a tag at registration with your name and team name (if applicable). This tag will function as your "number" and must be pinned to your shirt.  When you cross the finish line, you will be asked to turn in your tag.  We will post this in the order you finished and use this finisher board as one of two ways to score the race.
In addition, each runner crossing the finish line will be given a numbered popsicle stick indicating order of finish  The popsicle stick must be turned in to the team captain.  The team captain will then place popsicle sticks from each teammate into the envelope given to him at check-in and will complete the information on the front of the envelope.  The completed envelope, along with all the numbered popsicle sticks, will be turned in to the scoring officials.  The scoring officials will verify the information in each envelope to determine the order of finish for teams and individuals.  If you are running the race as an individual, you simply will turn in the numbered popsicle stick to the scoring officials.
Scoring:
The finish place of the fastest three runners will be added to determine the team score. In the mixed division the top three scores must include a runner from each gender. For instance, if the top three finishers are male, the third male score will be replaced by the score of the fastest female runner.

Series Scoring

Awards for the top teams in the series!
The winning teams in the men's, women's and mixed divisions will each chose a 501(c)3 charity to receive a $250 cash donation.
Team standings will be tallied over the full race series, with a series ranking based on lowest score calculated for teams participating in all of the races. To determine team scores, the top three runners on each team score and a 4th runner is a displacer. If there is a tie, the 4th runner breaks the tie.
Important note on mixed team scoring:In the mixed division, the top three scores must include a runner from each gender. For instance, if the top three finishers are male, the third male score will be replaced by the score of the fastest female finisher.
In addition to calculating team standings for the entire series, individual standings for the entire series will be calculated. Individuals competing in each race will receive a score based on a top-down system from 100 to 1 (eg, 1st place gets 100 points, 2nd place gets 99 points, etc.) based on how they place in each race. Men and women will be scored separately. This scoring system will allow individual participants to see how they stack up against their peers over the entire series.
Teams and Individuals must participate in all three events to be included in the series scoring.
